This is SAS’ CO2 offsetting

SAS has many initiatives in motion aimed at making travel more sustainable, including using new aircraft, transitioning to biofuel and a comprehensive carbon offsetting program.

1. EuroBonus members’ SAS flights, Youth tickets and SAS staff flights are automatically CO2 offset.

2. SAS voluntarity CO2 offsets ticket and invests in renewable energy.

3. Since 2005, SAS has reduced CO2 emissions by 22% per passenger km.

4. SAS has committed to reducing CO2 emissions by a further 25% by 2030 compared to 2005, among other things by using new, fuelefficient aircraft.

New aircraft

SAS has taken delivery of four new Airbus A330 long-haul aircraft and as of June 2019, 26 Airbus A320neos, which have up to 18% lower CO2 emissions compared with the earlier generation aircraft they replace. SAS will also introduce eight new Airbus A350s, which will lower CO2 emissions by approximately 30% in the coming years.

Transitioning to biofuels

SAS’ overall goal is to reduce total carbon emissions by 25% and operate with biofuel equivalent to the total consumption of all domestic SAS flights by 2030.

CO2 offsetting

April 2018, SAS started including CO2 offsetting as a free, integrated part of all SAS Youth tickets. In February 2019, SAS also began automatically offsetting CO2 emissions generated by EuroBonus members on SAS operated flights. All CO2 emissions generated through business or leisure travel by SAS staff are also offset.

Naturally, SAS offers all travelers the opportunity to calculate the greenhouse gas emissions from their flight by offering a tool to calculate the CO2 emissions and to buy carbon offsets when traveling or sending cargo with SAS. The data in this calculator is continuously updated to reflect the aircraft fleet and routes flown.

How it works

The CO2 footprint that a traveler generates on a flight is offset through emission reduction mechanisms in carefully selected renewable energy projects. These specifically include projects in China and India that involve the transformation of wind power to electricity on the global electricity grid. An external partner, The Natural Capital Partners, helps SAS select the projects and manage the investments.
