Coffee’s hot in Amsterdam
Keng Pereira is a trained barista and was recently named runner up at the 2015 Dutch Barista Championship. Amsterdam born and bred, Keng says the Dutch have always been big coffee drinkers but, in recent years, coffee has moved from the kitchen to the outside world.
“Instead of staying home, we’ve started going out for coffee. And as more and more coffee bars start popping up, people are becoming more knowledgeable and adventurous with what they drink,” he notes.
According to Keng, there isn’t a single secret to what makes a great cup of coffee, but good coffee bars do have certain things in common.
“Using a top-quality machine and grinder and keeping a clean workspace really make a difference – along with how and where you source your coffee, of course,” he says.
Here are Keng Pereira’s top five coffe tips:

Scandinavian Embassy
Scandinavian Embassy mainly works with Scandinavian suppliers who, Keng says, tend to favor lighter roasts. He goes on to explain that most true coffee lovers generally prefer these lighter roasts as it brings out more complex flavors in the coffee. One of several places bringing filter coffee back in fashion in Amsterdam.
