Eight great places to eat in Odense

Organic, locally sourced produce and ambitious chefs have brought a new quality, edge and finesse to the food scene in Odense. Here are eight places with outstanding food in the main city of Funen.

Pasfall

Thomas Pasfall has created a truly amazing restaurant in Brandts Passage, where he transforms local seasonal ingredients into gourmet class dishes. The restaurant has been recommended in the Nordic Guide Michelin and the White Guide since 2016, and was nominated for six awards in the 2019 Danish Good Food Guide. Pasfall won two of the awards – Jesper Kristensen was named Restaurant Chef of the year, and Mikkel Barth Sous Chef of the Year.

Martin Meldgaard Pilsmark worked at Falsled Kro and Under Lindetræet, before opening No. 61, which was named Denmark’s best Bistro/Brasserie in 2014 by the Danish Good Food Guide and listed in the White Guide in 2016. Classic Danish and European bistro cuisine made from scratch with carefully selected local produce.

Goma

At Goma, they serve both sublime sushi and delicious, small Japanese dishes on the kaiseki principle, where you can keep ordering dishes and continue your meal for as long as you feel able to. Or simply stick to drinks and snacks or even go straight to desserts. Goma also hosts food events including a guest appearance by legendary chef Per Hallundbæk of Falsled Kro. Mini restaurant Vår

Vår is a small and intimate restaurant with room for just 20 diners at six tables. This charming mini restaurant serves delicious, fresh and delightful gourmet dishes based on sustainable local Funen produce, accompanied by biodynamic and organic wines. Unpretentious, light and delicious, recommended by both the Guide Michelin and the White Guide. Vår also has a bistro upstairs.

The Balcony

The Balcony is right in the very center of Odense, and since opening in 2016, has ranked as one of the best in the city. The interior is elegant with leather, white linen and dark velor, while the menu is fresh and Nordic and 60-90 percent organic/biodynamic. If you're here on a weekend, you can try their Sunday Surprise lunch, where you can eat and drink to your heart's content from a menu composed by the staff - for Dkr 350. Recommended in the White Guide.

Aro

An old factory provides an experimental stage for Aro, that Bjørn Jacobsen and Christoffer Schärfe call their “ambitious food playground”. Both chefs have worked at leading restaurants such as Le Sommelier, Geranium and D’Angleterre, and their Franco-Nordic gourmet food using the best raw materials has made Aro one of the most popular gastro addresses in Odense.Recommended in the White Guide.

Sortebro Kro first opened in 1860 and combines an elegant restaurant setting with modern gourmet food.

Sortebro Kro

Sortebro Kro is one of the best preserved restaurants in Denmark, first opened in 1860. It has been part of Den Fynske Landsby open air museum since 1945, and combines an elegant restaurant setting with modern gourmet food. Head chef is John Kofod, who has had an international career including as a founder member of the Bocuse d’Or in Denmark. Sortebro Kro is recommended in the White Guide.

Styrbæks

Chef Klavs Styrbæk describes Styrbæks as a gastronomic project that is both a gourmet restaurant, chef school and a place to meet. Some days the restaurant is open, other days it's reserved for special events, but the starting point is experimental cuisine based on local Funen ingredients. Styrbæk is also a famous TV chef and cookbook author with a love of squid.
