Katrina Markoff’s Chicago favorites

Local food, vintage vinyl, and sophistication Soho-style. Chicago chocolatier Katrina Markoff share her favorites.

Elizabeth Restaurant

This Northside restaurant offers seasonal dishes that have been locally sourced or hunted. It’s one of Katrina’s favorite places to eat. “I always like to go there because she changes her menu a lot, it’s quirky, and she does a lot of foraging for it.”

Reckless Records

“I get really inspired by vintage LP art,” record collector Katrina says. Reckless has three locations in Chicago. Vosges Haut-Chocolat’s music-inspired Groove Collection truffle set took a lot of cues from Katrina’s digging in record bins.

The Bloomingdale Trail

“It was an old train track. It’s a great place to feel like you’re in nature and be able to look down at buildings like you’re on an ‘L’ train, but walking.” The elevated track, converted into a trail and park, stretches almost three miles across four neighborhoods on the northwest side.

“I love the vibe there. The private area is upstairs, but the bottom floor’s open to the public – it’s a social club, with coffee shops and restaurants. The other day there was a girl painting on the building. It just always feels like there’s something going on there, a creative class vibe.”

Chicago’s ethnic neighborhoods

“Places like Devon Avenue, the Indian part of town where you can get mehndi on your hands, eat Indian food, go to an Indian grocery store, and find Indian jewelry. Same with the Pilsen neighborhood. I love the Mexican Heritage Museum, which has some of the best art from Mexico, chocolatier Katrina says. The neighborhood has lots of restaurants and is a real upand-coming place in Chicago.
