Neukölln is where it’s at!

If there’s a trendy new restaurant opening in Berlin, you can bet it’s in Neukölln! Hang out in the city’s hippest neighborhood.

Once an area associated with crime and social vulnerability, Neukölln has become the new place to be in Berlin. Quite a turnaround in just a few years. Annamaria Olsson, author of the new Berlin guide Mitt Berlin, has lived in this district for five years and has observed the rapid change at close quarters.

“When I moved here, there was not a single café with Wi-Fi. I had to go to the library if my Internet connection at home went down. Now you see people sat around with their laptops everywhere,” says Annamaria.

For those wanting to experience “hip Berlin”, Neukölln is the ideal destination, according to Annamaria.

“This is no shopping mecca and the hotels here are generally pretty ugly. But there is a lot going on, there is a wonderful mix of people, and it is home to many of the best restaurants, bars, and cafes right now.”

Annamaria’s five top tips in Neukölln:

Melbourne Canteen

A cafe in the trendiest part of Neukölln that serves fantastic breakfasts and brunches. Their egg dishes and corn pancakes are amazing and there’s plenty of room to sit outside and enjoy the sunshine. And they make the best Bloody Mary in the whole of Neukölln!

Klunker Kranich

A bar with one of the very best views of Berlin. Located on the roof of a shopping mall, this is a typical Berlin hangout that is great for all the family. There is a children’s play area with a sandpit, some urban gardening projects, and they often have bands and DJs in the evenings.

Tempelhof

An absolute must in Berlin. Partly because the former airport has an important place in Berlin’s history, but also because it is such a great place to enjoy a walk, bike ride, or picnic, or play soccer. Make the most of the wide open spaces!

Lavanderia Vecchia

This was Neukölln’s first more elaborate and trendy restaurant when it opened in 2010. They serve really great Italian food and you will want to order everything off the menu. The decor is incredibly beautiful and has a really cozy feel. But make a reservation in advance as it can be difficult to get a table! If you can’t get in, they have a sister restaurant at practically the same address, only facing the street. It’s called Lava and is also very good.

Rag and Bone Man

Neukölln is a great place to do some second-hand shopping. At Rag and Bone Man, which is run by a Swede and an American, you will have no trouble putting together an outfit with some Berlin Bohemian flair.
