Roy Fares’ guide to sweet LA

Celebrity pastry chef Roy Fares introduces us to the sweet goodies of Los Angeles. Scandinavian Traveler met Roy to find out what’s hot in American baking and where to go for the best coffee break in LA

Roy Fares’ two great loves are the sun and pastries. So it’s no surprise to find that his favorite place on earth is California.  On his new TV show, he takes viewers to the best places in Los Angeles, and then invites them into his own kitchen and shows how to make all those wonderful sweet treats.

Why do you love American pastries so much?

“Mainly because they are so visual. More is more and there is a lot you can play around with. And then I love enhancing the flavors and doing them with a bit more panache.”

Here are Roy’s tips for the most tempting coffee breaks in Los Angeles:

Magnolia Bakery

“Magnolia Bakery started off in New York and has now expanded all over the world, including Los Angeles of course. The TV show Sex and the City made this cupcake chain super famous. When you walk into Magnolia Bakery, you feel like you are entering the home of an American grandmother, with its flowery drapes and pastel colors. They are most famous for their cupcakes, but you should also give their pies a try.”

Joan’s on Third

“Near Magnolia you will find Joan’s on Third. It’s like a tiny marketplace where you can have lunch or breakfast, or buy something to take out from their bakery. All freshly made in a gorgeous environment with lovely people.”

Urth Caffé

“A real ‘in’ place to go. Popular with Swedes and Hollywood stars alike. Everything is organic and they have their own coffee roastery. You can get everything from the most sumptuous pastries to healthy vegan food.”

The Griddle Café

“The best place for pancake lovers! The lines are often really long, but I promise you it’s worth the wait. Their pancakes are so good!”
