Get into the Christmas spirit at five castles and manor houses on Funen
The beautiful backdrops create the perfect holiday atmosphere and the markets are a must for many locals in the run-up to Christmas. Here are five of the best Christmas markets on Funen:
Christmas market at Valdemar’s Castle
Valdemar’s Castle on the island of Tåsinge outside Svendborg was built by none other than Christian IV for his son Valdemar Christian and was later taken over by naval hero Niels Juel, whose family still owns it today. At the Christmas market you will find displays from Georg Jensen and Royal Copenhagen, as well as lots of stalls selling crafts, candles, jewelry, Christmas ornaments, decorations, etc. The castle restaurant is the tastiest way to satisfy your hunger.
November 28–29, 10am–4pm
Slotsalleen 100, 5700 Svendborg
Christmas market at Egeskov Castle
The beautiful Renaissance castle of Egeskov is home to Funen’s largest Christmas market, with 100 stalls selling delicacies, Christmas decorations, crafts, and much more. You are free to explore the castle gardens and use the play area, which has a playground, Segway course, and mazes, and when you get hungry, there are lots of stalls selling mulled wine, æbleskiver, and roasted almonds, as well as the Jomfru Rigborg café. There are also Christmas carols, castle goblins, and a paper-cutting workshop. A sure-fire family hit.
November 7–8 and 14–15, 10am–5pm
Egeskov Gade 5772 Kværndrup
Christmas market at Harridslevgård
This grand Renaissance castle has a different decorative theme in each room, while in the Great Hall there is a large Christmas market with Christmas ornaments, arts and crafts, interior décor, jewelry, clothing, and Christmas decorations. There are areas for paper cutting and pasting and a picture treasure hunt for the children, while the castle’s atmospheric great kitchen sells mulled wine and æbleskiver.
November 21–December 13, every Saturday and Sunday 11am–6pm
Assensvej 3, 5400 Bogense
Christmas market at Herregården Lundegård
The beautiful half-timbered building is a classic Funen manor house, while the Christmas market offers delicacies of locally produced meat, honey, beer, wine, candy, chocolate, etc., as well as knitwear, yarn, wool, jewelry, leather, ceramics, gnomes, and Christmas decorations. And you can look forward to mulled wine, æbleskiver, cake, coffee, sausages, and a lunch platter with ingredients from local producers.
November 21–22, 10am–5pm.
Lundegårdsvej 44-46, 5672 Broby
Christmas market at Langesø Castle
For many Funen residents, it is only a proper Christmas if you have cut down your own Christmas tree in the forest at Langesø Castle. The castle enjoys an idyllic location at Langesø, and a brisk walk in the forest and around the lake can be suitably rewarded with mulled wine, æbleskiver, hot cocoa, and other nice things in the old smithy. Here, and in the Laurel House, you can buy local delicacies, cheese, wine, jewelry, Christmas ornaments and decorations, and of course Christmas trees and greenery. And you can also take a trip around the forest in a horse-drawn carriage.
From November 22 every weekend until Christmas. Open 10am–4pm.
