Norwegian culture events to see in 2020

The entire world is been assembled at Norwegian museums, art galleries and concert halls in the coming year. Here are five exhibitions and events that will offer visual appeal and whet your curiosity.

Symphonic Bowie

During his time in Berlin from 1976-79, David Bowie recorded his album trilogy Low, Heroes and Lodger. Trondheim Symphony Orchestra is celebrating these works with a concert, Bowie in Berlin. The concert will be conducted by Hans Ek of Sweden. Jenny Abrahamson, Moto Boy and Joanathan Johansson will be the singers. In addition to Bowie songs, they will also play music that inspired him, such as by Kraftwerk, Lou Reed and Iggy Pop.

Global dystopia

Throughout the year, you will be able to see exciting art in the magnificent museum at Tjuvholmen in Oslo. The year starts with Appha Crucis, an exhibition of African contemporary art featuring 17 artists from seven African countries. The exhibition is part of a series that explores the art scene on different continents. It is curated by André Magnin. Exhibition dates: 31 January – 17 May 2020. Therese Möllenhoff of Astrup Fearnley is curating the exhibition Art About Architecture. Rather than exploring art in architecture, the exhibition looks at works on the theme of architecture. Exhibition dates: 12 June – 6 September 2020. American artist Josh Kline will be exhibiting at the museum from 2 October to 10 January 2021. The works present the artist’s dystopian visions of how society is managing technology and finance.

Festival Artist Joar Nango

Norwegian Sámi architect-artist Joar Nango has been chosen as festival artist of the year in Bergen. Bergen Kunsthall staff curate the events and choose the participants and being named festival artist of the year is a very prestigious role. Bergen Kunsthall calls Nango one of the most relevant artists of recent years. Nango trained as an architecture at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology in Trondheim and at the Weissensee Kunsthochschule in Berlin. Climate change, sustainability and the marginalization of ethnic minorities are some of the themes he addresses. “Over the past ten years, Joar Nango has developed an impressive interdisciplinary practice,” says Axel Wieder, Director of Bergen Kunsthall. Winter film festival in Tromsø

That Tromsø is turned on its head during the annual film festival is an understatement. Everyone hits the streets to watch movies, eat and drink. The movies are screened at several locations, including outdoors in the main square. The 2019 festival attracted an incredible 60,501 visitors to a city with just 71,590 inhabitants. This year’s program includes both short films and feature length movies from both local and international directors. The festival has a separate program for movies from northern countries such as Canada, Iceland and Sweden. The festival is also a meeting place for the movie industry with conferences and debates. You can even pitch your own idea for a movie, at the financing forum, North Pitch.
