Prestigious music awards
The Polar Music Prize 2016
TV4 broadcasts live from the banquet from 8pm to 10pm, with highlights from the afternoon’s ceremony in the Stockholm Concert Hall.
The Grammy Awards
These are the music world’s equivalent of the Oscars and are awarded for outstanding achievement in the music industry in a range of categories (there are currently 105 award categories covering 30 different genres). The Grammys are awarded in February each year and can be seen on American TV channel CBS or followed online at CBS.com.
The Brit Awards
The Brit Awards, often simply called The Brits, is Britain’s biggest pop music award ceremony. The first ceremony was held in 1977, when no less than The Beatles won three awards. Since then, British pop stars such as Elton John, the Spice Girls, U2, and Adele have all been winners. The ceremony is broadcast live on ITV in February.
American music magazine Billboard is famous for charting the best-selling records in America. Their awards ceremony is held in May each year and rewards the year’s top artists. Unlike other award ceremonies, the winners are determined by lists of sales, downloads, and statistics, rather than chosen by a jury. The ceremony is broadcast live on May 22 on ABC.
International Classical Music Awards
There are prestigious awards for all genres in the music world. When it comes to classical music, it’s The International Classical Music Awards that count. Categories include best symphony orchestra, choral works, and opera. You can watch the ceremony at medici.tv (different months every year).
