Running races to enter in 2017
A fast and flat 5,000m in Carlsbad, California with a view of the Pacific Ocean. The elite race is one of the world’s fastest.
An all-women 6.5km race in Geneva, Switzerland in association with the Geneva Marathon. Finishes along the lakefront.
Great Ethiopian Run
Founded in 2001 by Ethiopian great, Haile Gebrselassie, the 2016 event had 40,000 participants.
Bay to Breakers
First held in 1912, San Francisco’s Bay to Breakers race is 12km, not 10km, but the fun you’ll have is worth the extra 2km. Famous for fancy dress runners and “caterpillars,” Bay to Breakers attracts over 50,000 competitors and is one of the world’s great running races.
Athens Classic Marathon
Inspired by Pheidippides, this bucket list marathon runs from the Marathon plain to the Olympic Stadium in Athens.
Marathon du Médoc
The slowest marathon you’ll run, for sure. There are water stations, of course, but the wine stations are a lot more popular and you can fuel yourself on steak and oysters along the way.
Once you’re “been there, done that” with marathons, what remains is ultras. An ultramarathon is any race longer than a marathon, and the 89km Comrades in South Africa, established in 1921, is one of the most famous.
Comrades not tough enough for you? Try the Spartathlon, a 246km race against the clock (cutoff times at multiple checkpoints mean if you’re having a bad day, you won’t finish), the weather, the Greek countryside and yourself. Finish this one and you can call yourself tough.
