Oslo often ranks as one of the most expensive cities in the world to live in and visit. But if you’re visiting Oslo for a meeting or to see Justin Bieber for instance, it doesn't have to cost an arm and a leg. Here are ten places to stay for less than Nkr 1,000 a night.

Citybox Oslo

This hotel in the center of Oslo is more like a self service supermarket. There’s no reception desk. You book a room by phone or online and collect a keycard and pay at the hotel terminal. If you have any questions or wish to change your departure date, you can ask the hotel concierge. There’s no room cleaning service for shorter stays but you can order this for an extra charge. This hotel opened in 1954 for Norwegian soldiers on leave in the capital. It’s now available for anyone to book. The rooms are basic but of a high standard including en suite and TV. Rates from Nkr 685 for a single room. If you travel as a party, you can pay per bed in a three to six bed room or Nkr 425 per bed. Perminalen has WiFi, dining room, conference room and a courtyard that is open in summer to eat outside.

Cochs pensjonat

At this venerable guest house on the corner of Parkveien/Hegdehaugsveien, you can book a room with a shared bathroom in the corridor from Nkr 539 per night. For an extra Nkr 120, you can have a room with en suite, kitchenette and TV. The guest house was opened in 1927 by the Coch sisters. They originally provided board and lodging for bachelors. The guest house featured in author Lars Saabye Christensen's award winning novel The Half Brother that was published in 2001.

This is a popular youth hostel for backpackers on a budget. There are 307 beds in 88 rooms. These include single and four-bed rooms. A bed in a shared four-bed room without a bathroom is Nkr 285 and a single room costs Nkr 400. Breakfast is included in the rate. You need to bring your own bed linen and towel or hire them from the hostel for Nkr 50 and 20 respectively. You can also prepare your own food in the communal kitchen. WiFi is available in most rooms and communal areas. The youth hostel is about four kilometers from the city center, but there is a good bus service that runs pretty much 24 hours and a streetcar service to Sinsen.

Anker hostel

A popular youth hostel that attracts backpackers from all round the world. Choose from a single room from Nkr 640 or in an eight or twelve bed dormitory for Nkr 250 and 290 respectively. You need to bring your own bed linen and towel or hire them for Nkr 50 and 20 respectively. You can buy a breakfast ticket and eat at a restaurant close by. It may not be the most salubrious part of Oslo, but you're unlikely to come to any harm there. Close to Grünerløkka, Oslo Central Station and Karl Johan.

Minimum stay is three nights, but a reduced rate is available if you stay longer than 30 days. The cheapest rooms have a shared bathroom, but for a bit more you get your own bathroom and kitchenette.
