Bed and breakfast on the French Riviera

Chambres d'hôtes are the French equivalent of bed & breakfast - private properties with lovingly prepared breakfasts. Some of the best are to be found in the villages around Nice. Scandinavian Traveler has picked out four you'll want to try.

Staying at a French chambre d'hôte is as cozy as it is affordable. Standards are often high and the rooms personally decorated. Your hosts will be happy to share their top local tips with you and sometimes even a meal around their table, known as table d'hôte.

Chambre d'hôtes provide an unbeatable base for discovering the real France. The only downside is that most of them are in remote rural locations, so you’ll need a car.

The Côte d'Azur has several high-quality properties to choose from, all within a short distance of Nice. Why not book a few of them as overnight stops on an unforgettable road trip along the Riviera?

La Parare

Just over a half-hour drive north of Nice is La Parare, a traditional 18th-century stone house nestled among trees bearing almonds, figs and olives. A small swimming pool, a large terrace and four individually and tastefully decorated guest rooms also await you here. Everything is taken care of with a smile by Swede Karin and Franco-Dutchman Sydney, who have created the relaxing place of their dreams. All the rooms have a spacious bathroom, private entrance and open fireplace, making La Parare a destination for all seasons.Whatever time of year you go, this is an unbeatable choice for a romantic weekend and for discovering the mountain villages north of Nice. Some nights, Karin and Sydney provide a delicious dinner for all the guests around the family table. If you're lucky, it'll all be rounded off with some of Karin's lovely almond and orange cake.Breakfast is a gourmet experience too, with freshly squeezed juices, home-baked bread and preserves made using fruit from the garden.

Domaine Pins Paul

The bed is round and the breakfast is one of the best I've ever eaten. But it's the views that I'll remember the most. The panorama that awaits when your host Philippe opens the doors to the terrace is simply stunning. It stretches all the way from St Tropez to Monaco, taking in the Cap Ferrat peninsula, the sea, the surrounding mountains and the medieval village of Èze, perched on a tall cliff.Domaine Pins Paul nestles hidden in the hills above Èze. The approach road is a gravel track that's so steep and narrow you'll think you've gone the wrong way. Once you arrive, though, an old stone house awaits with four double rooms (one of which is a circular tower room with a round bed) and one suite, surrounded by a garden with two swimming pools.Breakfast is served on the terrace and includes everything you could possibly wish for: crisp croissants, fresh fruit, three different types of marmalade, good coffee and French cheeses.

Villa Kilauea

Villa Kilauea is just a 15-minute drive north of Nice, but the silence and rural tranquility make the city feel much farther away. There are three double rooms and one suite to choose from, all with light, fresh and romantic décor. There's also a large swimming pool and a peaceful garden containing fig trees and lavender. You can lie back in a sun lounger here and look out across the mountains and vineyards of Bellet, one of the smallest wine regions of France. Across the valley is Chateau de Bellet, a modern vineyard that offers wine tastings in an old chapel. An absolute must for all wine enthusiasts! Each morning, your hostess Nathalie serves up a delicious breakfast buffet, with home-made yogurt, home-baked brioche, cheeses, cured meats and other goodies. Served on the terrace if the weather's nice or in the pool house if it's a bit cooler.

La Fabrique à Poupées

La Fabrique à Poupées - the old doll factory - is located in a factory that used to make souvenir dolls in the 1950s. Nowadays it has been converted into a modern bed & breakfast run by Florence, the granddaughter of the woman who started the factory. The newly refurbished rooms have a hotel feel and the large bathrooms come complete with a bath and soaps from local perfumery Fragonard. Some of the factory's features have also been preserved, such as sinks with legs from old sewing machine tables.Breakfast is served on the terrace, overlooking the garden, and includes home-made, organic marmalades and eggs cooked to your liking.Located just two minutes' walk from the old town district of Menton and 500m from the train station, La Fabrique à Poupées is a great option for those without a car.
