Berlin’s best clubs

The choice of clubs in Berlin is vast, with music orientations ranging from minimalist techno and hard trance, to pumping house and gaudy disco. Parties often start on Friday, and, as often as not, continue uninterrupted until long into Monday.

Prince Charles

One of the few good clubs in Berlin dedicated to hip-hop and r’n’b. With a sunken bar in a drained swimming pool, house evenings and hip-hop nights are hosted here. If you want to get away from the DIY feel of many of the techno clubs, or have tired of claustrophobic concrete cellars, Prince Charles is a good and somewhat more salubrious alternative.

Exhibition

Until 28 February 2019, there’s a multimedia exhibition, “Nineties Berlin,” in Alte Münze in the Mitte district. The exhibition tells the story of Berlin in the 1990s and covers the growth of the city’s party culture, with techno clubs and the Love Parade phenomenon that were so important. Trace the growth of the different styles within techno and house and read about legendary clubs such as Tresor and UFO.

Sisyphos

Sisyphos, one of the most popular summer clubs in Berlin, is located a couple of kilometers from the nearest railway station, in a rundown industrial site. The club has several dance floors in what was once a scrap metal and container company of the same name, and is open from Friday to Monday, sometimes even all the way to Tuesday, without a break. On opening in 2009, it quickly became one of the most popular locations in Berlin, with its own sandy beach and a small dam with a serpentine bridge.

Tresor

Tresor, housed in an old bank vault by Potsdamer Platz, was one of the first clubs to emerge after the Wall came down. Like many other places, it was forced to close when land prices rocketed and a development wave went through the city after the turn of the millennium. The Mall of Berlin now occupies the same address. Today, however, the original owner has reopened the club, but now as part of an enormous power station owned by Swedish energy company Vattenfall. There are two dance floors, where heavy techno is played in the basement by a DJ behind a grill.

Best time to go: Many people claim that the regular queer party Herrensauna is the best of the Tresor parties.

Griessmühle

In a dilapidated industrial mill along the Landwehrkanal in Neukölln, just outside the ring road, is Griessmühle. At certain times, trucks from the adjacent storage facility have to edge past dancing guests in the dusty club grounds, to exit the site. The area has become home to a number of incredibly popular clubs in recent years, such as the gay club Cocktail d'Amore and the 90s rave themed Tekknozid.

Best time to go: After midnight for the raw industrial feel, during the day on weekends for a more relaxed atmosphere in the “garden.”

Sameheads

Berlin is full of small, neighborhood clubs that are well worth discovering. One of the true treasures is Sameheads in Neukölln. There’s a bar on the upper floor, eclectically styled with mannequins, while the basement houses a cramped and humid techno club. Due to problems with the neighbors, the volume on the upper floor is at conversation level, while the sound in the basement is all the rawer. Many interesting bookings and a good and keen clientèle. On weekdays, they host quiz and free movie nights screening obscurities from yesteryear.

Best time to go: Sameheads is known for its Italo disco nights in particular.
