Author Christina Rickardsson’s guide to Umeå

Christina Rickardsson is a successful author who spent part of her childhood in Umeå, Sweden. Here are her favorite recommendations for anyone thinking of visiting the capital of northern Sweden, whatever the time of year.

Rickardsson’s autobiography “Never Stop Walking” describes her upbringing in a cave in Brazil and living on the streets of Sao Paulo before being adopted at the age of eight and moving to Vindeln outside Umeå in the north of Sweden.

Her book has now been published in several languages around the world and Rickardsson has become a much acclaimed and popular lecturer. Even though she has roots in both Latin America and Scandinavia, her heart beats a little faster when she thinks of her home town of Umeå.

“Over the past few years, the city has really gained a rich array of restaurants and culture activities, which I really like,” Rickardsson says.

Köksbaren

A fantastic restaurant close to the railway station with a light and calm interior design and brilliant menu. You're always served soup as a starter at lunch.

Rex

I have always enjoyed the atmosphere in Rex in the old city hall, very largely thanks to the fine service they offer. I often come here to eat or simply for a cup of coffee. Their 1920s bar Juliette is where I like to meet friends for a drink.

Umeå Parachute Club

This is my favorite place in spring and summer. I love to skydive and Umeå is one of the most beautiful places to jump with views of the sea, river and city. It's one of the few cities in Sweden where you can enjoy this combination of sights, as the airport and parachute club are close to the city.

Umeälven

If you want to see Umeå from a different angle than a parachute, jet skis are really fun. It's great to whizz round and see the city from the water and explore small islands in the area. Both beautiful and idyllic.

Skating on Nydala

When the spring sun returns in the mornings, it’s a fantastic feeling to grab your skates and head to the still frozen Lake Nydalasjön. It's a wonderful place to skate in peace and quiet.

Bildmuseet

The museum is housed in a wonderful building by the river and they have incredible exhibitions here. There’s also a cafe where you can have lunch or a cup of coffee.

DUÅ

This is a small delicatessen that is famous throughout Sweden. On weekends, it’s transformed into a bar called Open/Closed where the personnel serve unique drinks. The store is beautifully situated in an indoor square in Väven culture center and they always provide good service.

Bölesholmarna

I like to walk here across the old cycle bridge. You can swim, BBQ, exercise or simply sit and relax on these small islands in Umeälven River. They are a haven of calm in the center of the city.
