Copenhagen's new commanding heights

In a country without any mountains, you have to build vantage points, and building commanding heights points is currently all the rage in the Danish capital. Join us on a trip to the top to view the new Copenhagen from on high.

Views are at a premium and can sell everything from homes to restaurant visits and movie theater tickets. We love the idea of admiring the city from above, and now there are more places than ever to do this from. Here are a few new locations that offer majestic views.

Wow effect in The Silo

The former industrial port of Nordhavn is nothing like it once was, and nor is The Silo. Once upon a time, this 17-story futuristic sensation was a grain silo bearing the giant graffiti message HVA DRIKKER MØLR. However, instead of being demolished, it has been transformed into an award-winning landmark The Silo, where adults can eat well and drink cocktails with panoramic views all round the city.

Science in the Mærsk Tower

Copenhagen University'’ new tower boasts both a world class faculty of health and medical science plus award winning, sustainable architecture. The most energy efficient laboratory building in Denmark has an internal park, art and a cycle and walkway at treetop height that is open to everyone. There are guided tours here several times a week, plus monthly Talks at the Top on the 15th floor, where you can sip laboratory cocktails and learn more about anything from stem cells to the role of DNA in criminal investigations.

The highest vantage point in the city

A new 29-floor tower block containing student apartments and family homes has risen over Nørrebro. And the view over the city at 100m above ground are not only for residents. In fall 2019 occupants start moving in, the top floor will boast the highest public access vantage point in Copenhagen.

Denmark's only movie theater with a sky bar

A spectacular movie theater has opened at the top of Experimentarium in Hellerup. It combines luxurious water views with a restaurant, bar and interior design with chandeliers, sumptuous velour, brocade cushions and small tables for champagne celebrations. The program includes both blockbusters and arthouse movies and despite the exclusive appearance, the movie theater is open to everyone. The idea of dinner and a movie suddenly sounds that much more appealing.

View the forest from above

They've also picked up the height bug outside Copenhagen. A masterpiece of a viewing tower recently opened 90km south of the city. This enormous spiral creation has been constructed in the middle of a forest by Gisselfeldt monastery, as the final piece of Camp Adventures, a climbing park, a 600m walk into the forest. At 145m above sea level, it is the highest point on South Jutland with views over the tree tops and landscape stretching all the way to Copenhagen and Malmö.

Exercise at height

At Copenhagen's artificial ski slope on top of the waste to energy plant Amager Ressource Center, you can combine exercise with views even though the city is as flat as the proverbial pancake. You can also admire Øresund while getting fitter at Konditaget Lüders roof top exercise yard in Nordhavn. And when Copenhill opens later in the spring, you can ski, hike, climb and jog at 85m above the city.
