Don’t miss this in Singapore
Sentosa is a small island right at the southern tip of Singapore that is devoted to pleasure. You can reach it by cable car and once there, a myriad of attractions await you including Universal Studios with its thrilling rollercoasters and Underwater World where you can dive with sharks. There is a little piece of history here, too, at Fort Siloso. When you’re completely worn out, visit the Spa Botanica, with cascading waterfalls amid lush grounds.
Singapore Zoo is unlike most others in the world. And it is likely to enthrall even the most anti-zoo people in your travel party. The 300-plus animal species here are housed in spacious, naturalistic, “open” enclosures, separated from visitors by dry or wet moats. Highlights include breakfast with the orangutans, the zoo’s stars, and a recreation of the Great Rift Valley and its animals.

This area epitomizes super-stylish, modern Singapore with buildings, lights, shops and restaurants that will bombard your senses. The architectural icons here include the Marina Bay Sands Casino, billed as the world’s most expensive when it opened in 2010, as well as the multi-award-winning Gardens by the Bay, which includes the world’s largest glass greenhouse and whose supertrees use photovoltaic cells that capture solar energy to light them up.
Singapore offers a lot of shopping. And you can buy just about anything here, from designer threads to antiques and the latest IT and electronic gadgets. Many of the stores are in malls, which in Singapore are more like glittering temples to consumerism. Orchard Road is the city’s shopping mecca, a 2.2km road full of huge malls, department stores and specialty shops.
One of the world’s legendary hotels, Raffles was founded in 1887 and oozes colonial elegance and decadence. You may not be able to afford to stay here, but many areas are open to the public including the gardens and a stylish boutique. And no visit to Singapore is complete without sipping a Singapore Sling in the hotel’s Long Bar, the place where the gin-based cocktail was invented.
