Kiruna’s top spots

Karin Stöckel is one of Sweden's top freeride skiers. She competes on the Freeride World Tour and her CV includes victories in the Nordic Championships. When she’s not on the road, she lives in Kiruna. Here are her favorite places in and around the town.

Abisko

The top of Nuolja mountain in Abisko National Park is one of the best places in the world to view the Northern Lights. It’s also a great starting point for mountain hiking. “You can see the Northern Lights in both fall and winter here.”

This book store was opened by local celebrity Tora Lindberg. Author evenings and events such as the Kiruna Book Festival are organized here. “A brilliant book store. The place to find local literature and books about the history of Kiruna.”

Arctic Thai & Grill

Every self-respecting town in Sweden has a Thai restaurant. This is just as true above the Arctic Circle. “The Thai place that is the locals’ favorite. Everyone eats at Arctic Thai.”

Luossabacken

A ski resort in the middle of Kiruna with three lifts and four slopes. “In summer, I used to take the midnight sun trail to the top of Loussa,” says Stöckel. “There are glorious mountain views to the west and south from there. In winter you can ski down the piste.”

Wennbergs

Wennbergs has been selling Sami arts and crafts for over 100 years. The perfect place to find a keepsake to remember this special part of the world. “A classic Kiruna store that sells Sami arts and crafts such as jewelry, shoes, knives and textiles.”

Riksgränsen

Riksgränsen is a ski resort with 60 peaks over 1,200 meters, 120km north west of Kiruna. “Absolutely fantastic skiing all spring. From here, you can see all the way to the sea and the Norwegian fjords.”

The bar at Ferrum, the hotel where visitors to Kiruna have gathered for decades. “A delightful lounge bar with pool tables and comfy armchairs. The perfect place to hang out.”

A popular café in the town center with good coffee and simple lunches. “Most people head to Safari, it’s a Kiruna institution where everyone goes sooner or later.”

Björkliden

Another resort a little closer to Kurna, Björkliden is all about skiing in winter, with the usual northern light trips, husky safaris and snow mobile tours also available. In summer, you can go on a delightful day trip to Låktatjokko mountain station, the highest restaurant in Sweden. “The best thing about Kiruna is that it’s so close to the mountains. You only have to travel a few kilometers to reach fantastic nature.”

Torneträsk is a large lake surrounded by gentle mountains. “The area around Torneträsk is as beautiful as anywhere. Perfect for hikes and picking berries.”

The menu at the Camp Ripan hotel restaurant is dominated by local produce such as reindeer meat and Arctic char. “If you want to eat a bit more upmarket, with good wine and are prepared to pay a bit more, Camp Ripan is the place to go.”

Nikkaluokta

This Sami village in the fantastically beautiful valley at the foot of the Kebnekaise massif, is 60km up the road from Kiruna. “A perfect day trip to see Kebnekaise. A hike to Lake Ladtjojaure is highly recommended.”
