Being chosen to house the Centre Pompidou’s first satellite outside France is no small feat for Málaga. The Pompidou is located in the city’s newly renovated Muelle Uno port area, in a large glass cube known as the Cubo. A contract is in place to allow the Málaga pop-up to use the building and the Pompidou name for five years, during which time it will host its own exhibitions and shows, as well as displaying loaned works from Paris by the likes of local favorite Pablo Picasso, as well as Frida Kahlo, Francis Bacon, Sophie Calle and Tony Oursler.

Another impressive premiere for Málaga is the first Western European outpost of the Russian State Museum, located in a renovated 1920s tobacco factory. The Spanish satellite has a 10-year agreement with the St. Petersburg collection, during which time it will showcase of a variety of the museum’s works. In its opening exhibition, which runs until January 2016, it is presenting 100 Russian masterpieces from the 15th to 20th centuries, including pieces by Vasily Kandinsky, Ilya Repin, Vladimir Tatlin and Kazimir Malevich.

Since Pablo Picasso was born in Málaga, it should come as no surprise that one of the most impressive collections of his work is also kept in the city. The permanent exhibition includes 285 pieces donated to the museum by members of the Picasso family.

Opened in 2011, Málaga’s Carmen Thyssen Museum showcases 19th century Spanish (predominantly Andalusian) art, through a selection of works provided by the extensive Thyssen-Bornemisza collection in Madrid.

For some considerably more cutting-edge curating, head straight for the excellent CAC, a modern art space that exhibits works by international and up-and-coming Spanish artists. Entry is free, and exhibitions change on a regular basis.
