SAS Crew Tips: Aarhus

Air Purser Mikkel Bøgelund Bach travels all over the world, but still loves coming home to the city he was born in. “It has a great food scene, a beautiful city center with smaller parks, while there are lovely forests that follow the coastline,” he says.

Moesgaard Museum and forest

This cultural and archaeological museum has works including the Grauballe Man, the world’s best preserved bog body. The main part of the museum’s collection is of Danish origin, but the ethnographical collections contain almost 50,000 artifacts from around the world. End the day by walking through the deer garden of Marselis.

Den Gamle By

Den Gamle By (The Old town) has been a favorite of the locals for decades. This open-air museum opened in 1914 and today consists of 75 historical buildings collected from all over Denmark. Save your appetite for a Danish pastry at Cafe Bonnich.

Latin Quarter

Tiny shops, cozy cafes, historical buildings and much more. On sunny days people dine on the narrow, cobblestone streets. Coffee enthusiasts should try Great Coffee. Søren, a world-champion barista, will help you choose the right cup.

Dokk1 and the harbor

Dokk1 houses the Aarhus Main Library, playgrounds, public services, businesses, a theater and more. It’s great for younger kids. The view of the harbor from inside the building is incredible.

Best city views

The Salling Rooftop and ARoS Rainbow are the best places for a bird’s eye view. Salling is an iconic department store, while ARoS Rainbow is something out of the ordinary. Your panorama rainbow is a circular 150m indoor walkway in rainbow colored-glass, and sits on top of the most frequently visited art museum in Scandinavia.

Jægergårdsgade

My favorite hangout area, this is a vibrant street with various boutiques, bars and restaurants with big and small ambitions. Start the day at Street Coffee, and others I like are Fika, for fresh organic food, Klassisk 65, Forlæns/Baglæns and Mikkeller bar.
