SAS' Crew tips: Copenhagen

Tanja Smed is a purser with SAS and tour guide in Copenhagen. Here are some of her recommendations for exercise, architecture, juicy burgers, a hidden garden and great cocktails in Copenhagen.

Konsistoriegården - the hidden garden

Very few people know that behind the main building at Copenhagen University, is a hidden garden that’s a green city oasis with a large tree in the middle and facades covered in Parthenocissus tricuspidata, a flowering Japanese vine. A beautiful and tranquil place to take a timeout at any time of year, but especially stunning in the fall.

New architecture

Ørestad and Havnen represent some of the most successful new developments in the Danish capital such as Tietgenskollegiet, Cirkelbroen, Den Sorte Diamant and the new Ofelia Plads by Skuespilhuset. From Ofelia Plads, there are views of Amalienborg Palace and the Opera House, plus hot tubs and saunas, loungers, concerts, morning yoga and plenty more.

Wine on Store Strandstræde

Gorgeous old street in the inner city with a real Latin atmosphere and great wine and tapas bars, such as the Italian Nebbiolo and the stylish Clarrods.

Konditaget Lüders

I’m crazy about the Nordhavn Project in north east Copenhagen and the exercise roof at Lüders. It’s a fantastic place for stair workouts, as there are 135 steps up to the root. And from the top, you’ve got fantastic views across the whole of the new Nordhavn area.

Havneringen

Havneringen is a spectacular 13km cycling and running circuit that offers plenty of varied city landscapes with the port, the ramparts at Christianshavns Vold and the back of Christiania.

Fine dining at No. 2

No. 2, Michelin restaurant AOC’s little brother by Cirkelbroen in Christianshavn, is worth a detour for both the food and the waterfront location. You’ll find all that’s great about city life here, while you can take a back seat and simply enjoy the entire experience.

Brilliant burgers

Short and to the point: There’s a Henrik Boserups juicy burger bar, at Palads and in Kødbyen.

Coffee ’n Hygge

Next Door Café on Larsbjørnsstræde has the world’s best service and a spectacularly tattooed owner. It’s a real local hangout with regular customers and a place to experience genuine Danish “hygge”.
