The DJ's New York club guide

DJ Sammy Jo knows everything there is to know about gay nightlife in the Big Apple. The former tour DJ for the Scissor Sisters gives Scandinavian Traveler his unique take on the city’s hottest alternative club nights.

Working as a DJ and touring with American pop group Scissor Sisters, Sammy Jo has traveled the world, but admits New York is the city he always returns to.

“New York was where it all began for me so, even though I love cities like London, Berlin or Barcelona, I’m always drawn back to the Big Apple and inspired by everything that happens here after dark,” he says.

These are Sammy Jo’s top tips for the hottest nights on New York’s gay and mixed scene right now:

The Rusty Knot

One of the best answers to the weekend hangover can be found at West Village watering hole The Rusty Knot. Perched on the edge of the Hudson River, this is the best place to finish your day with a spectacular sunset view. Enjoy a cold Tecate with lime and salt as JD Samson and her roster of cool DJs spin the best of auteur disco and house. And you’ll still be in bed by 10pm!

Le Bain

Hotel roof terraces are the answer to surviving summer in the concrete jungle that is New York. On Top, by nightlife promo queen Susanne Bartsch, is held at “Le Bain”, the terrace of The Standard Hotel in the Meatpacking District. Featuring amazing views of Manhattan, a crepe stand and a Jacuzzi.

The Box

Internationally renowned (and infamous) nightclub The Box caters for those who like their clubbing risqué. Wednesdays is THE night to catch the scintillating shows and sup cocktails with nightlife’s supreme creatures in the privacy of the curtained booths upstairs. Don’t be surprised if you end up onstage as part of the show – audience participation is a common occurrence.

Killer Queen

For almost a decade, this little gay bar on East 6th Street has been the go-to spot to enjoy a cheap cocktail and good music. It’s the perfect place to hang with the locals and avoid the noise of bottle service tourist traps. Thursday night is rock night, with DJs Sammy Jo and Darren Dryden on the decks.
