When in…. Alicante

Surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea and with more than 2,864 hours of sunlight per year, Alicante is a great place to take a dip, immerse yourself in culture and enjoy the wonderful gastronomy.

San Juan beach

With its crystal-clear water and 3km of fine sand, this is one of the most well-known beaches in town. Plunge into the sea and then relax with a drink in one of the chiringuito beach clubs.

Postiguet beach, 900m of golden sand next to Alicante’s old quarter and with spectacular views of Santa Barbara´s Castle, is also worth a visit, and if you travel with your dog, don’t miss Agua Amarga, the only pet-friendly beach in the city.

Nearby is the picturesque island of Tabarca, a Mediterranean marine reserve, easily reachable by boat from the port and a perfect place to go snorkeling. The crystal-clear waters make this a perfect place to go snorkeling and discover incredible marine life.

The largest medieval fortresses in Spain - Santa Bárbara Castle. Photo: Shutterstock

Santa Bárbara Castle

Standing 166m above sea level on the top of Mount Benacantil, this is one of the largest medieval fortresses in Spain and had huge strategic value in the Medieval Period during Muslim domination. The castle has canons, dungeons, a moat and the ruins of a small church.

Over the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries, it was attacked many times, and it was left abandoned until 1963, when it was finally opened to the public.

From “La Torreta”, the highest tower of the castle, you can enjoy a panoramic view over the bay of Alicante.

Traditional nougat

You can’t leave Alicante without trying Jijona turrón, a traditional nougat dessert made with honey, sugar and egg white, with toasted nuts.

It is one of the most popular Christmas desserts in Spain, and historical studies suggest that it probably originated in the village of Sexona (now Jijona) in the 16th century. It is shaped either in a rectangular tablet or a round cake and is one of the best souvenirs that you can take back home after your visit.
