Hong Kong in China has been hard at work billing itself as Asia’s art powerhouse.
“The city has long had an active and energetic art scene, but the past five years have been remarkable in bringing Hong Kong’s potential to the fore,” says Aric Chen, curator-at-large of visual museum M+, which is under development in the West Kowloon Cultural District.  On your next visit, try to stop by our favorite galleries in town.

H Queens

Designed by local practice CL3, this gallery tower is the new outpost of galleries Pace, Pearl Lam, Hauser + Wirth, Tang Contemporary Art and others. Impressive spaces show off impressive art pieces, the largest of which had to be lifted in via an external gantry, since the tower sits so snugly between neighboring buildings in Central.

Tai Kwun

A careful restoration of the old police station Tai Kwun in the heart of Hong Kong, China has transformed the space into a treasure box of modern art and heritage. The modern extension by Herzog & de Meuron adds to the tantalizing fusion of old and new, and the vibrant program, showcasing contemporary art alongside performance art and historical works, makes for hours of perusing.

The 20-plus art groups that camp out at this former slaughterhouse area in Kowloon have been stirring things up for years. Not afraid to openly show provocative pieces, installations and works that tell frank stories about Hong Kong-China relations, this arts enclave is worth supporting with a visit.
